Oak Alley Plantation

On my trip to New Orleans we visited the estate of some colonial sugar cane planters. The plantation was call Oak Alley after it's iconic Virginia Oaks which are estimated to be 300 years old. This is the back entrance to the house. The thick carpet of fallen leaves. This is a reconstruction of the original slave quarters. One of the windows from the slave quarters. One of the less elaborate chandeliers in the mansion. The dinning room. The large contraption above the table in a fan that was pulled by a slave in the corner at a speed just slow enough to keep the candles lit. The medallion above the chandelier is the original plaster and horse hair decoration that was there during the lives of the last plantation owners.

Current Art

In addition to my joining of a ceramics class, I have also enrolled in a basic print making class as well. Here are a few pictures of my first linocut prints. To make a basic print you start with an original drawing on a piece of paper and then transfer it to a block of material. Then you cut out all the parts you want to remain white, so in my print I wanted the flower to be black so I cut out the background. When printing the image, I rolled black ink onto the image surface and placed a piece of paper on top and rubbed the backside of the paper with a wooden spoon. This helps transfer the ink off the block onto the paper. I made a total of five final works in my series...each one is considered an individual art work.

Here's a throw back to my summer in Washington. This picture was take on Silver Star mountain during sunset. I camped on the mountain and viewing a sunset from a mountain is one of my favorite experiences. Although there wasn't a lot of different colors, it was beautiful in a pure, stripped down way. The sun cast its rays across the foothills in a few basic colors, seemingly in purest form. You could almost feel the sunset in the complete stillness. There wasn't a sound, except for a calm, cool breeze drifting serenely over the mist. It must be because I am a Minnesota flatlander, but I have never felt so close to the sky. I've flow on planes many times but I've never experienced the sky in such a way as I did on that little mountain. I had a great feeling of peace and closeness to the creator.
